General Council candidates 2010

Seven portfolio positions and one non-portfolio position are up for election to SCM's General Council at the 2010 AGM, which will be on Saturday 5 June in York.

You can read some of the candidates' statements below.

Jelly Morgans standing for Convenor

My name is Jelly and I am standing for Convenor! I am nearly 26, currently working at Sheffield University Chaplaincy. I like chocolate, purple things, red wine, God, socks, candles, sleeping, silly action songs, and sunshine. Not necessarily in that order. I do not like cheese, being cold and mornings. I think I would be good in this position for several reasons:
- I have experience of SCMs and affiliated groups in Edinburgh and Sheffield, as well as some of the challenges they face at different points
- I currently work at a chaplaincy, which gives an added perspective to student-life and the work of SCM
- I am an oldie but only recently graduated so that gives me lots of experience while still being a student peer
- I have a fair amount of experience with national SCM as well as having attended two WSCF conferences
- I wouldn't actually be very good at any of the other GC positions, but will be better at co-ordinating those of you that are!

Andy Treharne standing for Membership and Groups

Hi, I’m Andy. I’m standing for the Membership and Groups portfolio on SCM’s general council. I’m currently in my 2nd year of a PhD in Chemistry at Southampton University. I got involved with SCM in Southampton as a 2nd year undergraduate when the group was just starting up in 2005. I’ve been involved ever since, serving on the committee as vice president for 3 out of the last 4 years and drinking a lot of tea. Having experience in helping to lead a local SCM group, I’d now like the opportunity to use that experience to help new SCM groups form and enable existing groups to grow. I’m keen to work closely with the staff team to develop and implement strategies to enable the movement to grow as well as looking after our existing membership. Having had first hand experience of the regionalisation project, I’d like to work hard to help SCM develop and build on this work in the future. I would love to take on the challenge of establishing this new role on GC.

Bryan Jackson standing for International

I am currently a second year medic at Glasgow Uni and interested in running for a position on General Council. We began an SCM group at Glasgow this year and it has been a great opportunity to develop a faith community for those of us like myself who maybe feel like they don't fit into the traditional university Christian scene or feel like it is missing something. I am very interested in the International aspect of the Movement and would like the opportunity to help develop these links further. As a Canadian student, I would like to especially work on developing our ties with the North American Movement, learning from some of the campaigns of the Canadian Movement and walking alongside the American Movement as they start up. I love the Biblical image of the Kingdom of God being a kingdom without borders and am passionate about international issues.

Charlotte Thomson standing for Media and Communications

Hi, I'm Charlotte and I am standing for the Media and Communications portfolio. Although I am just finishing my first year in French with Culture, Society and Communications, I have been involved in MethSoc at The University of Birmingham for nearly four years. My role on the committee is Publicity Rep, which involves thinking up new ways of publicising in order to have a presence on campus - it is important to us that students know that we are there to support them. When I am not studying or at MethSoc I work part-time at Birmingham Cathedral and my jobs include making the publicity and running our website. I hope to have the opportunity to bring the skills gained from my work with the Cathedral and MethSoc (and maybe my degree. . .) to SCM.

Tim Stacey standing for Publications

Hi I'm Tim, a second year philosophy and politics student at York University. I've been on General Council for a year in the current communications portfolio. As part of this role I've been helping to look after Movement magazine by chairing the editorial meetings and set up the Movement change process. I'd like the chance in the new publications role to finish off the work I've already begun. By this time next year there should be a new and improved Movement that is more closely connected to the Movement. Produced with the help of students and made to be more appealing to students. I think I'm in a good position to prevent Movement from repeating previous decisions and trying to reinvent the wheel. I've spent a lot of time this past year reading through old Movement documents and talking to people previously involved in making decisions about the magazine. Also whilst there is an interim editor for the magazine I think it would be good to have continuity in the editorial group for the remaining work before the changes to Movement are made.

George Walsh standing for Events

Hi, I'm George and I'm standing for the Events portfolio. I have really enjoyed being on GC this year, having a chance to work alongside some great folk, and getting to be a part of lots of exciting plots and schemes! I'm a member of the SCM at Glasgow Uni, where I'm studying medicine. I like singing, blowing bubbles and stripy socks. I can be easily bribed with vegan chocolate goodies.

Policy and Campaigns: vacant

Non-portfolio: vacant
