March for the Alternative, Prayer and Protest, Nonviolent resistance

It was great to see lots of SCMers in London for the March for the Alternative. I haven't got round to posting any reflections on the march or the other events that day including the Oscar Romero service and the UK Uncut occupation of Fortnum and Mason, as well as the black bloc actions but here are a few thoughts from others!

Fr Martin Poulsom SDB and James Trewby from the Salesians reflect on the Oscar Romero service and their experience of the March.
I personally think that the church has to be a church of prayer and protest. It's a bit like that reflection on action and reflection, in a way. Prayer without protest can all too easily become a form of accommodation to injustice. That's one of the things that the witness of Oscar Romero makes clear to me, I think.

I want our resistance to be courageous, colourful, creative - and occupations and paint play their part. Smashing up things is mostly counterproductive and I really think that we have to braver in standing up to those who 'tear down', but fail to 'build up'.

Protest is the legitimate right of everyone – and we believe it is right that people are protesting against some of the richest in the world failing to pay their taxes while others suffer serious and increasing levels of poverty and deprivation.
