‘Pray without ceasing…’ 1 Thessalonians 5:17

It’s hard to even begin processing what’s happening in Iraq right now. As Islamic State fighters sweep through large swathes of the country, Christians are being driven from their homes and women and girls are being sold into slavery. The people suffering are predominantly civilians, targeted for their ethnic or religious identity and desperately seeking a way out.

Some figures:

  • Almost 2,000 people died in June alone, with the overall death toll at more than 10,000 since violence began.
  • The number of civilians displaced by fighting now stands at over 1 million, the highest number since violence erupted in January.
  • 50,000 people from Iraq’s Yazidi group have fled their homes in Nineveh’s Sinjar region. Half of them are children.
  • It is believed that zero Christians now remain in Mosul, capital of the Nineveh province in northern Iraq.

In the face of chaos, we pray to and serve a God of peace. Let us offer up prayers and intercessions for the people of Iraq, as Paul instructed us in 1 Timothy 2:1.

Almighty God, you are the King of Peace, a God of love, justice and mercy.

We remember our brothers and sisters in Iraq, those who have been forced from their homes and those on the run. Grant them mercy and comfort.

God we ask that aid may be delivered efficiently to those in need. We pray for the spirit of compassion to rest among people within the region, that those who might help would provide safe haven and reach out in love. Protect relief workers who are on the ground and grant safe passage to all Iraqi refugees who are seeking shelter.

Loving God we ask for an end to violence. May you soften the hearts of those fixed on destruction. Though we lack understanding, we trust that everything is possible through you.

Lord we ask for people around the world to show compassion during this difficult time. We pray for unity among religious communities, that we might stand together as witnesses to love and mercy.

Amen
