At the moment on my placement, I am researching ideas for an advocacy campaign aimed at the general public, to enable people to engage with the issues of global poverty and climate justice. In essence, I am trying to find ways of encouraging people to become advocates for the poor, speaking on their behalf to those with power.

Nothing is impossible with God (even the very improbable)

Early on in my placement, I was warned that working with the issue of global poverty could lead to feelings of frustration and hopelessness at my inability to fix the world. In my naivety, I thought this was fate quite unlikely to befall me. As long as I could bring about some sort of change, I imagined I would be content with that. However, I hadn't reckoned on two things.

Why look beyond our borders?

One of the key features of the Faith in Action project is that we allow our placements to be enriched by dedicating time to reflecting theologically on our experiences. It is in this space that I have been grappling with a question that is often levelled at the cause of international development: why should we invest time and money in solving other countries’ problems when there is so much need at home? It’s a good question. And I would be lying if I said I have found any simple answers – in scripture or anywhere else.

Questions before I begin...

I’m Victoria, one of the new Faith in Action interns with SCM. Anyone who followed the brilliant blogs of last year’s interns, Jo and Hattie, will know about Faith in Action already.  But, for those who don’t, it is a year-long project through which two interns (this year, Yannick and I) explore their Christian faith by engaging with an issue of peace or justice in a secular environment. I will be spending the year looking at the issue of global poverty, on placement with the international development charity, Concern Universal – and I’ll be blogging throughout the process.
