SCM's theme for 2008-09

So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he
created them; male and female he created them.

Genesis 1:27

There is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.
Galatians 3:28

affirming diversity, challenging injustice

Does gender matter? How do we perceive and construct our identities? Is gender binary? Can men be feminists? What relationships are there between gender, power and injustice? Whatever happened to a positive masculinity? Where are women's voices in the Bible? Does it matter that Jesus was male?

During 2008-09 join SCM as we explore the complex world of gender and justice, thinking through some the questions above and much more.

It’s not just about how we view ourselves and others, but about the impact of gender constructs on a whole range of issues including education, health, spirituality and relationships.

You can get involved in the year theme Liberating Gender by:

  • Downloading and using the workshops, reflections, bible studies and prayer & worship resources that will be made available throughout the year on the SCM website

  • Exploring the theme yourself through online resources and recommended reading
  • Taking action on gender justice. Ideas on the campaign page

  • Inviting our Links Worker Rosie to visit your student group or chaplaincy, and run a workshop introducing the theme

  • Coming along to the annual conference where we'll explore the theme in more depth with speakers, participatory workshops, small groups and worship

  • Using the theme to plan your own events and programmes e.g. Advent studies, Lent course, weekly meetings, retreats, services
