How to Start an SCM Group : Step 1

Step 1 : Find some people

People you already know.
Do you have friends from your course, halls, church, Amnesty, LGBT etc that you think might be interested? Worst they can say is no!

Contact the office.
Rosie (links@movement.org.uk) can let you know if there are any individual members, friends or recent graduates in your area. She can also give you resources and advice about setting up your group.

Use the internet.
- Post on the SCM facebook page and the forum to see if you can connect with anyone in your area.
- Set up your own facebook group, post it to your profile, invite your friends, get them to invite their friends.
- Post on your blog / twitter.

Posters/leaflets.
- Stick some eye-catching posters up around uni, especially in high-traffic places (eg. the library)
- Leave leaflets in some local churches.
(Make sure to include contact information!)

Freshers Week.
- Depending on how your freshers week is organised you might be able to have a stall, if not try contacting the chaplaincy to see if you can put some publicity on theirs.
- Consider having an event, or linking in to an event hosted by other groups / local churches.

As soon as there are a couple of you, arrange a get-together - coffee, pub, dinner. Talk, plan and enjoy yourselves. Building a large group can be a slow process, but you don't have to wait to be community - what was it Jesus said about where 2 or 3 are gathered?

So - this is just a start - what are your top tips for starting an SCM Group?

Posters

Time consuming as it is, posters definitely work. In Manchester, we postered one event across campus, and 25 people came instead of the usual 8-12.

George - this is fantastic!

I think the bit about not having to 'wait to be community' is really important. Start with where you are and who you are.

And the visibility stuff is really important - facebook, flyers, posters.

The SCM office can provide postcards and posters which you can stick your own contact details to (or you can make your own DIY ones) as well as logos and pretty SCM stripes for your facebook page or blog. Ask me (links@movement.org.uk) if you want any of these.
