MethSoc is the oldest student Christian society
at the University of Durham. Despite our name
and our ties with the Methodist Church we are
not a society exclusively for Methodists but are
open to members of all Christian denominations.
In fact, a considerable number of our thirty
current members are not Methodists themselves.
We are a close knit and friendly group of people
who offer an open and welcoming atmosphere
in which we can come to better know God and
support one another in our spiritual journeys.
Although we do many social activities together,
our primary focus is on God and exploring our
understanding of him.
Methsoc also sees social justice as an important
and integral part of our relationship with God.
This is not an idle belief. Throughout this year
we have run the Christian Aid Act Justly course
(along with Worship sessions and Meditations in
various college chapels) on Thursday evenings to
think about our calling in an unjust world. We
also run an annual quiz to promote the work of
a charity such as Send A Cow and raise funds
for their work. Each year we have a Missions
and Community Service Week in which we
devote time to helping the local community
and we hold a termly service for the residents
of St Margaret's Care Home.
We also value each others friendship greatly
and consequently have a bring-and-share
fellowship lunch before Bible study on a
Wednesday and usually go to the Court Inn
for some social time after our Sunday night
speaker. Besides this there is our termly
retreat - a great opportunity to step outside
the confines of Durham with its stresses of
work and the focus on God whilst taking in
a new location. This has included trips to
local places such as Carville, and further
afield trips to places like Seahouses Edinburgh,
York and Hawes (in Wensleydale.) Other events
are also in the pipeline including a Fair-trade
Pudding Party, Quiz and our Christmas and
Summer Soirees.
Our Chaplain in the wonderful Julie Lunn
who is also chaplain of Aidan’s College and
is always more than happy to help and
support MethSoc and its members in anyway
she can.
MethSoc is a Durham Student Union ratified
society, and is affiliated with the Student
Christian Movement (SCM).
