SCMers join protestors at Aldermaston

SCMers joined around 800 other demonstrators outside Aldermaston Atomic Weapons Establishment on 15 February.

Faith groups blockaded the Tadley Gate, with several demonstrators lying down to block the road. Around 100 others supported them, singing protest songs, hymns and Taize chants, and dancing in the road.

This was the largest demonstration at Aldermaston for a number of years, and comes ahead of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation treaty review in May 2010. Many demonstrators voiced their opposition to the planned renewal of the UK's Trident Nuclear Weapons System, at an estimated cost of £76 billion.

SCM National Coordinator Hilary Topp and member John Cooper, joined the group from Queen's Theological College in Birmingham. Fellow group member John Hull said “This place belongs to the Lord. We are here to reclaim it in his name”.

Hilary Topp, SCM National Coordinator commented on her experience of the day saying "It was a really inspiring day, and very moving to see so many people passionate about this issue."
