Hi folks,

Hope you're all well, I'm enjoying riding my new electric scooter and drinking licorice tea - though not simultaneously - at the moment.

As you may know we're putting together a groups pack and in it will be a prayer and meditation resource - 'the SCM little book of prayer', if you will.

What would be massively awesome is if any SCM members could contribute reflections/prayers/meditation practices that they find useful or write about a group prayer that they have done with their group so others can try it. There are many ways to pray, share yours here...

Cheers me dears!

Aileen

P.S. I'll ask you before I put anything in the book!

I'm a Community partner for the Jesuit Volunteer Community in Birmingham. Over the past few years different groups of volunteers have explored ways of praying together.

One very simple way of praying which has worked well involves the group sitting round in a circle. An object (candle in a holder or pebble or whatever you have) is passed around the circle. When it comes to you, you can pray out loud or silently, and then pass the object to the next person when you are ready. When it has gone around the circle the final person places it in the middle and you finish with a few moments of silence or somebody can say/read a short prayer or blessing to finish.

This is a good way of including everyone - those who feel comfortable praying out loud and those who prefer not to.

Prayers and justice

Liam's picture

Aileen, I'm not an SCM member any more, but I know a lot of SCMers will want to incorporate a concern for justice into their prayers and spirituality. At Church Action on Poverty we produced a whole resource called 'Just Prayer and Spirituality' for our Just Church programme. You'd be very welcome to reproduce any of the prayers and activities from it in your book if you like - or just list it as a resource for people to use.

It's available online, free.

Hey Aileen,

I think I'm being a bit dense - is it different ways of praying that you're looking for, or different prayers etc, or both?

come one, come all...

Hi George,

Anything you feel is inspiring and would aid SCM groups/members would be great. Ways of prayer or prayer activities for groups is what we're lacking at the moment, though I haven't looked at the CAP stuff yet. We also need stuff on meditations.

Cheers

A

thanks!

P.S.
Thanks Rosie and Liam, that's really helpful!

Graces

(I've got food on the brain and graces are some of my favourite prayers)

Lord, make us not like porridge:
Sticky and hard to stir.
Make us like cornflakes:
Easy to stir and ready to serve.

Lord, make us to be, not like cornflakes:
Noisy, superficial, and cold;
But like porridge:
Sturdy, warm, and comforting.

Here are some more specific questions related to prayer for any one to answer..

  • what is prayer / what does it mean to you?
  • what is your favourite gathering prayer / liturgy / grace / blessing / other?
  • what is your favourite book about prayer?
  • What is your favourite meditation / way to meditate?

you don't have to answer them all :-)
