Still Small Voice - Conference 2011

It's three weeks until conference =]

If you haven't booked yet, you can book here. There are already nearly 100 people coming!

If you have any questions to ask, if you want to volunteer your talents or if you just want to tell everyone how excited you are! then this is the place to do it.

Some things we need volunteers for are :
- taking lots of lovely photos during conference
- letting people know what we're up to on twitter, facebook or blogs
- running the sound board in the hall so that we can hear people
- making some crafty bits and pieces to decorate the conference hall
- hosting an open space session on the topic of your choice
- greeting people with a smile at the registration desk

Tom and I are coming! And a

Tom and I are coming! And a load of Southampton old guard from back in the day are coming too! I AM SO EXCITED!

Who's bringing knitting? I'll be where the drinks are in the evening with the knitting, come and say hello!

And the SCM song, we need someone to print songsheets, so we can all sing it happily!

I'll bring my sewing! We

I'll bring my sewing! We shall establish a craft corner =)

Craft corner

I think a dedicated craft corner is a must! Can it be near the campaign corner? And then there could be a crossover bit in the middle for craftivism (craft + activism). Knitted graffiti anyone?

Craft corner

Yes! And then we can make bunting. It's possible that I have become a bit obsessed with bunting... But that doesn't mean we shouldn't make it anyway =]

There was a really cool idea at theProject (a precursor to Solas, which in turn is a younger sister of Greenbelt, but in Scotland) where people brought a bunch of knitting needles, and different wool offcuts, and people just knitting this awesome hotchpotch thing by joining different pieces of knitting together. It was especially fun for people who love knitting but never finish a project (ME!).

OOH we do need song sheets

OOH we do need song sheets for poisoning the student mind, I only really know the first verse and it would be nice to do all of it for once.

Also what's knitted graffiti?

George, you are reading my

George, you are reading my mind. I was thinking we should make a load of bunting on friday night, and then people can come to craft corner to make prayer flag bunting through out the weekend to take home.

I can bring two sewing machines and a whole bunch of scrap fabric.

People can then write or sew or paint prayers on the flag parts, we can either sew on bunting for the group, or make them a small string of bunting to take home.

Knitted Graffiti is when you

Knitted Graffiti is when you attach knitting to things like making a cover for a street lamp I think.

Here's two verses of the song:
Poisoning the Student Mind:

The SCM has found its new vocation
Poisoning the Student Mind!
Its leaders by astute manipulation
Are poisoning the Student Mind!
And pious souls are sure that we will go
To toast our toes in the furnaces below
If we give heed to leaders that we know
Are poisoning the Student Mind!

Poisoning the Student Mind!
Poisoning the Student Mind!
Bad men, bold men, villains double-dyed
‘Neath their smiling countenances hide
Spiritual arsenic and moral cyanide
For poisoning the Student
poisoning the Student
Poisoning the Student Mind!

bunting :)

Hi Alex,

Brilliant idea! That would make a great activity for people to get involved with when they arrive... if you are happy to co-ordinate, fantastic :) I can bring some scrap fabric too.

Music

Is anyone bringing musical instruments? I'd love for there to be a music corner.

Music

That would be wonderful :) We'll ask people to bring instruments in the next email that goes out to everyone.

And there will definitely be plenty of drums around.

I can bring a tin whistle or two. There are plans afoot to hold an impromptu ceilidh (dance) on the Saturday - so if anyone has any talent in that area (calling or playing) then let us know!

music and bunting and general excitement

Aileen's picture

Yay! Conference! I think we're bringing 15 or 16 people from Manchester, very exciting times.

I'm bringing musical instruments, two guitars probably, as I'll being performing on the Friday evening while the mass bunting-making session goes on. yikes.

I'm majorly looking forward to it. Boom.

Jesus and the Homeless

For those looking forward to hearing Ken Leech speak (as I very much am!) this article from the online journal of the British Jesuits Thinking Faith might be interesting: Jesus and the Homeless: Gerald O'Collins SJ. The lecture explores some of the theological themes surrounding Jesus' interactions with the poor and provides an insight into the thought behind the Catholic justice movement!
