Students
"SCM opened my mind to the kaleidoscope of textures and colours that make up the Christian faith" (David, SCM Manchester)
"SCM is where I met others who are passionate about inclusivity and justice" (Sarah, SCM Sheffield)
Here are just a few of the ways you can get involved in SCM.
Sign up to e-news
Want to stay in touch with what’s going on? We send out a monthly e-newsletter which is full of relevant news, events, recommended resources and campaign actions. You can sign up to e-news online.
Find us on Facebook and Flickr
SCM has an active presence on Facebook and Flickr. The Facebook group is a good way of finding out what’s going on, staying in touch with people you meet at SCM events, and sharing ideas and resources. Flickr is where we post photos from recent events.
Get involved with a local group or affiliated link
SCM has a presence in many universities and colleges in Britain, through a diverse network, consisting of student led groups, chaplaincies, denominational societies and chaplains. The contacts we have are all very different but have in common a commitment to openness, a respect for people, and the desire to be places in which the big questions about life and faith can be explored.
Our Links Worker, Rosie Venner, has the task of supporting the network through mailings, visits, events and by providing any other advice and support as requested.
Look at our Group list to find out if SCM has a presence in your University or College.
Get a group started
Can’t find an SCM group at your college or university? Setting up a group is easier than you might think and there’s lots of support available. The first step is to think about what is already available on campus, who might want to be involved and what kinds of meetings or events would work in your context. Gather a few people together, let others know about your plans, plan a programme and voila… an SCM group! Here’s a handy guide which goes into things in a bit more detail.
If you’re exploring the idea of setting up a group, our Links Worker Rosie and our Regional workers are always happy to meet up for a coffee and chat. You can contact Rosie at the SCM office. You can find out more about affiliating to SCM here.
Perhaps you already belong to a student group and would like to get involved in the SCM network? Do you share SCM’s vision and values? Existing student groups can affiliate to SCM – just contact the office scm@movement.org.uk or 0121 2003355.
Individual Membership
Membership is available to anyone who is studying or has recently studied at a UK institution of further or higher education (in the last three years). Individual membership is one of the best ways of keeping up with the movement, and getting involved in decision making. You also get fantastic discounts on events and publications.
Meet up with others
There are lots of opportunities to meet up with others within the SCM network. You can come along to a termly gathering or our annual conference (see the Calendar for upcoming events) or camp together with the SCM community at Greenbelt festival each year. Why not mobilise the SCM community to attend a march or take part in a campaign action that you feel strongly about? Or organise a regional meet-up for SCM groups and members near you? If you've got an idea for building up the SCM community then get in touch (links@movement.org.uk).
