Summer reading?
Any suggestions for books to read this summer?
The SCM office will be closed for a couple of weeks during August and I'm hoping to catch up on some reading. Please give me some ideas!
Here are two books I've read recently that I would encourage you to read if you get a chance:
- Gilead by Marilynne Robinson
Thanks to a recommendation from another SCMer, I finally got around to reading this. It's a fictional memoir of the elderly Rev John Ames, a minister in Iowa - recording stories from his life, and the lives of his father and grandfather, for his young son. Gives you an intimate encounter with his inner world, his vocation, his struggle with God and theology, his prayer life, his love for his wife, and a really vivid picture of a community rooted in the stories of the generations who have gone before. - The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood
Completely crazy but terrifying and believable picture of a dystopian world. God's Gardeners - followers of a religion inspired by Christianity, eco-activism, foraging and saving the species of the world - have long predicted the Flood. In the chaos that follows, terrible things happen to the central characters - but somehow it still manages to be a warm and human tale.
So.... what else should I be reading? Please share your recommendations here :)
A few I've recently read
Growing Women Leaders:nurturing women's leadership in the Church
by Rosie Ward
Good overview with lots of biblical ammo on why women can and should be leaders in the Church
Praying for England: Priestly Presence in Contemporary Culture by Sam Wells and Sarah Coakley
Examining the unique strengths of the parish model, God and sense of place.
Books!
I just read Gilead, it's so beautiful. Hmm. Others :
The Poisonwood Bible and The Lacuna both by Barbara Kingsolver.
The Millenium Trilogy by Steig Larsson (all quite violent, but none of it gratuitous).
I just got round to reading Girlfriend in a Coma and Hey Nostradamus by Douglas Coupland, which are a lot shorter than the others, but very good =]
I like anything by Jodi Picoult or Marian Keyes in the summer, too.
Oh, and The Island by Victoria Hislop if you haven't already read it!
Books....
Ooooo- 'Home' by Bill Bryson is very good and I also just read the millenium trilogy which I really enjoyed.
ooo and 'slow'by Carl Honore isn't bad...
