SCM General Council Visioning weekend 2009

St Peter's House, Manchester

A weekend of prayer and community for students and young adults jointly organised by the Taizé community and SCM, with St Peter's House Chaplaincy in Manchester.

‘Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom’
(2 Corinthians 3.17)

“What are you doing with your freedom?” asks Br. Alois in his Letter from China. This theme will run throughout the weekend as we explore, through prayer, discussion and action, what it means to be free.

SCM and Taizé are organising a weekend of prayer, workshops and community for students and young adults, bringing people from all over the country together to be part of a unique and exciting ecumenical gathering. Br. Paolo, who has been a member of the Taizé community for thirty years and is widely known from events including Greenbelt, will be there to share his experiences.

All are welcome, however much or little you've been involved in SCM or Taizé before and whatever your background is.

Put the date in your diary, invite your friends and spread the word!

Friday: arrivals and registration (from 16.30), evening meal and welcome.
Saturday: take part in workshops, small groups, Bible study, volunteering and creative activities. The main event (at 19.30) is a Taizé prayer at Manchester Cathedral.
Sunday: join with local churches for services in the morning, followed by lunch and departures from St Peter’s.

Suggested contribution to cover costs £20 or £25 (with £5 going to the travel bursary fund). Simple food and accommodation will be provided.

The weekend is open to all young people aged 18-28, and SCM members. 17 year-olds are welcome to participate in the Saturday daytime programme. All ages are welcome at the Cathedral prayer. Get in touch if you can help with music, singing, cooking, stewarding or workshops. Travel bursaries available.

More details on the programme will follow shortly. Join the facebook group to get updates and book your place now. Please book early as space may be limited.

  • Taizé is an ecumenical monastic community in France, made up of around a hundred brothers from many different countries. They want their life to be a sign of reconciliation between divided Christians and in situations of suffering. For over 50 years young adults have visited in large numbers for retreats and youth meetings. Taizé chants are a form of musical contemplative prayer popular throughout the world.
