Meditative reflections and worship resources

Many Rooms reflection

Many Rooms

We had a fun time leading worship at Greenbelt this year!

We were reflecting on the image of God's house (John 14:1-4) having many rooms, and encouraged people to explore this through creative prayer stations and themes of welcome, hospitality, abundance and diversity.

Here are some of the quotes we used:

Still Small Voice Prayer Trail (Part 3)

SSV2011: My soul waits in silence

Part 3 of the resources used in the Prayer Trail at SCM's conference..... feel free to adapt and use!

Springing up from the ground
Set up: Lollipop sticks stuck into plant pots or into the ground or gravel outside. Suggested verses to write on the sticks:

Be still and know that I am God (Psalm 46:10) Blessed are the peacemakers (Matthew 5:9) Believe in the light (John 12:36) Peace I leave with you (John 14:27) Out of the depths I cry to you (Psalm 130) My soul waits in silence (Psalm 62:1) To you I lift up my eyes (Psalm 123) I am with you always (Matthew 28:20) Make a joyful noise (Psalm 66)

“Faithfulness will spring up from the ground, and righteousness will look down from the sky.” Psalm 85:11

Take a word of hope and encouragement from the ground and carry it with you.

Still Small Voice Prayer Trail (Part 2)

Prayer station

Part 2 of the resources used in the Prayer Trail at SCM's conference.....

Beauty of the broken glass
Set up: some glass beads scattered on the floor

A Jesuit Community Volunteer once said that living out his spirituality in the inner city meant that the challenge to find God in all things included the beauty of the broken glass.

If you mean to take that challenge seriously - to find beauty and God in what is broken - then take a bead from the ground and keep it somewhere to remind you of that challenge.

Find out more about the Jesuit Volunteer Community here.

Still Small Voice Prayer Trail (Part 1)

SSV2011: Cosmic walk

Here are a few of the 'stations' used for the Still Small Voice prayer trail at conference this year. You are welcome to use them and adapt them for your own context. More coming soon....

Examination of Conscience
Set up: no equipment needed

Bring to mind the ways that you have practiced compassion, solidarity, peace and justice today, this week, this year.

Bring to mind the times today, this week, this year, when you have fallen short of your values, hurt others, harmed the environment, or neglected to take action.

Pray the following prayer as you go:

Loving God,
In our broken world, heal us.
In our injustices, re-form us.
In our mistakes, forgive us. Amen

This practice is inspired by a night prayer used by the Student Christian Movement of Canada

O God of light and truth

This prayer was used at SCM retreats and conferences over 90 years ago. I think it beautifully reflects the spirit of the early generation of SCMers, seeking to discover God's will for their lives. It remains a prayer we can all use in our own exploration and discernment....

For Guidance of Choice

O God of light and truth,
may Thy Holy spirit direct
all those who are in doubt and perplexity;
let them faithfully consider
what is required of them,
that they may see their duty
in the settled purpose
of doing what they believe
to be most acceptable to Thee.

Start Wearing Purple

Being colour-blind, Advent was always been a bit lost on me as a kid. Apparently, the guys at the front of church (and girls too, these days!) started wearing purple, but all I could see was a canny shade of blue. The season could have been salvaged had I ever got to play around with fire in church, but I was never chosen to light the advent calendar, so the season never really rose above the status of a four week wait, during which the weather outside got steadily worse, people inside became more stressed and I grew ever more impatient for Christmas.
